When I searched through my bookshelf for my next week’s reading target( I am still on my weekly streak of reading a book every week as part of my 2020 NYR New Year Resolution), my eyes stopped on an *old* book in Japanese — written by Dale Carnegie.

Then I wanted to find more books written by Carnegie, so started my book search on Amazon as usual. After couple of minutes, I found a shocking fact that there are TWO Carnegies! While I thought they are the same one — Andrew Carnegie who was the famous King of Steel-making and the Richest man in the world for a long time during his time. Actually the books I had in my hand was written by another Carnegie — Dale Carnegie who was born 53 years later than Andrew.

The only connection between them is the last name, and it’s NOT coincidental actually. It was *caused* by the choice of Dale, he chose to change his original last name from Carnegey to Carnegie after he rented the famous Carnegie Hall in New York City for his self-improvement course. And this is the cause of my mixing them into one person, and I think there could be still millions of people like me thinking they are the same Carnegie especially people who is not native English speaker since in lots of Asian cultures, they only use last name when they talk about *famous* people.

Andrew Carnegie kar-NEG-ee was a Scottish-American industrialist, and philanthropist. Carnegie led the expansion of the American steel industry in the late 19th century and became one of the richest Americans in history. He became a leading philanthropist in the United States and in the British Empire.

Dale Carnegie was an American writer and lecturer, and the developer of courses in self-improvement, salesmanship, corporate training, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.

Back to the question I asked — Which Carnegie made bigger impact to our world? No right answer for sure — while my answer is Dale Carnegie — since thru his still well sold books esp. How to Win Friends and Influence People published in 1936. Already over 30 million copies have been sold worldwide, making it one of the best-selling books of all time. In 2011, it was number 19 on Time Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential books.[2]

Last let me close this article with the best quotes from these two great Carnegies.

“No man can become rich without enriching others.”
“People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing.”
